RED RIVER (1948)
Sponsored by The Rossi Foundation

"Monumental...sweeping...powerful...one of the screen's supreme examples of motion picture art and entertainment." Variety

Capturing both the grandeur of the early West and the singular quality of its people, director Howard Hawks has given us what many (including Mick LaSalle) consider the greatest Western of all time. Based on a Saturday Evening Post short story by Borden Chase, RED RIVER tells of the first cattle drive over the Chisholm Trail, from deep in Texas to Abliene, Kansas. Packed with authentic details and photographic realism, the film has you riding with the saddle-sore cowboys as they battle the dust and rain and heat and frustration that accompany a long, hard drive. John Wayne is at the peak of his career as the self-made cattle king whose single-mindedness turns him into a cold-blooded executioner. In his frist film role, Montgomery Clift brings an awkward charm and nervy angulariy to his role as the adopted son. Walter Brennan heads an outstanding supporting cast. A great classic in the perfect ranch setting! 133 min.
