About Alan Arkin Born in New York, Alan began lessons in music and acting at the age of 10. In his early 20's, he became a member of the folk music group, The Tarriers, and wrote and performed many songs including the Harry Belafonte hit, The Banana Boat Song (also known as Day-O). Alan launched his acting career with Chicago's improvisational revue, Second City. This led to his first part on Broadway, the lead in Carl Reiner's play Enter Laughing, for which he won a Tony Award. Alan began directing for the stage with the much acclaimed Eh?, starring Dustin Hoffman. He then won an Obie for directing Jules Feiffer's Little Murders, followed by The White House Murder Case. Alan's first feature, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, directed by Norman Jewison, earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor, as well as an Oscar nomination. He received a second Oscar nomination for his performance in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. His other films have included Catch 22; Little Murders (which he also directed); Joshua: Then and Now; The In-Laws; Edward Scissorhands; Glengarry Glenn Ross; Jakob The Liar; America's Sweethearts; and Thirteen Conversations About One Thing. He received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the eccentric grandfather in Little Miss Sunshine in 2006. He also starred in several television shows, including the highly acclaimed A&E series 100 Centre Street, Pentagon Papers and Escape From Sobibor. He guest starred as the father of his real-life son, Adam Arkin, on Chicago Hope, which earned him yet another Emmy nomination and was recently seen in HBO's And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself with Antonio Banderas. When not occupied as an actor or director, Arkin is likely to devote his time to music or writing. He has written six books, the latest a children's book entitled Cassie Loves Beethoven. Special Note: Mr. Arkin will be teaching a three-hour IMPROV WORKSHOP on Sunday, March 21 from 1:00-4:00pm at La Perla Del Mar. The workshop is $75 per person and is limited to 21 participants.
