Mick LaSalle on "The Beauty of the Real: Great Roles for Women"
Sponsored by Vina Robles
PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE/TIME: Saturday, March 13, 1:00-2:30pm
Holiday Inn Express, San Luis Obispo MAP

Enjoy the wonderful wines of Vina Robles before and during the following workshop.

Hollywood stopped making films for the women's market during the 1960s, when women joined the work place and stopped going to matinees. Since then, the reigning American box office stars have all been men, and actresses and their vehicles have become marginalized. However, the French cinema has always been interested in women's stories. And right now, something is happening in France that has never happened anywhere, except once, in Hollywood in the 1930s. France has at least two dozen top-tier actresses (of all ages) doing the best work of their lives, making the kind of women's films that America once specialized in, but making them for our era.

In a 90-minute discussion, San Francisco Chronicle film critic Mick LaSalle previews his upcoming book, The Beauty of the Real. The discussion will include clips from recent films, some of which have never been seen in an American theater, as well as audio from his exclusive interviews with these actresses. At a time when Hollywood is squandering an entire generation of female talent, the modern-day Hepburns, Davises, Crawfords and Garbos are in France, making three movies a year. This is your chance to meet them.

Mick LaSalle is the author of Complicated Women: Sex and power in Pre-Code Hollywood and Dangerous Men: Pre-Code Hollywood and the Birth of the Modern Man. He was the co-author and associate producer of the Complicated Women documentary, which aired on Turner Classic Movies in 2003. The Beauty of the Real will be published by Stanford University Press in the fall of 2011.

Special Master Class: Improv Workshop with Alan Arkin
Sunday, March 21: 1:00-4:00pm
La Perla Del Mar, Shell Beach

This workshop isn't about being clever, or funny, or reinforcing techniques that the participants already have. It's about remembering how to be authentic. It's about utilizing improvisation as a method for self-exploration. That doesn't mean giving up having fun, or forgetting about creating wonderful and imaginative scenes, but it does mean having the courage to start over again from the beginning each time we go on stage, and letting the characters dictate where the work wants to go. It means functioning in a group situation so that we are supporting the work of the other participants and not just making points. It means making a conscious connection between our work in the scenes and our own emotional lives. It means reconnecting with the important work of play. And it also means having a hell of a good time. --Alan Arkin

Mr. Arkin, our 2010 King Vidor Award recipient, was one of the founding members of Chicago's improv revue, Second City. $75 per person. Limited to 21 participants, age 18+. All participants must pre-register. Sorry, this workshop is not free to pass holders. Space is limited, so register early online. Click here to REGISTER.

Special Festival Competition: Movie in a Day Marathon
Saturday, March 13. 10:00am - 5:00pm
Starts at SLOIFF HQ. San Luis Obispo

Is it possible to make a movie in a day, from initial idea to final edit? This event is a fun and exciting challenge for filmmakers of all ages. Participants will start out at SLOIFF HQ where they'll be placed in teams of four, in two age categories. (You can also register as a team.) Filmmaker Ryan Johnson will share professional tips, and teams will find out which downtown SLO landmarks and other elements must be used in their films. After thirty minutes of brainstorming, teams will be turned loose with their cameras until 2:00pm. Then back at HQ they'll edit their short films and add music. A panel of judges will choose two winning films. All films will be screened at a downtown theatre, and prizes awarded, on the last day of the festival (March 21).

$35 per person includes an MDM T-shirt. All participants must pre-register. Sorry, this event is not free to pass holders. Space is limited, so register early! Click here to REGISTER.
