Warden Building, 762 Higuera St. SLO
$5 at the door (free to all 2012 SLOIFF pass holders)
Ever wonder how films get chosen for film festivals? Join us in an interactive discussion of how SLOIFF films are selected – and the bigger picture – what are the elements that make a film a stand-out?
With the use of a few clips from some choice films, this workshop will act as an interactive forum for the discussion of basic film criticism and provide you with the opportunity to identify, analyze, and judge the components of a film. We’ll review a couple of SLO Festival short films and discuss how these films are judged in competition based on a list of criteria. We will also discuss how films in lists like “The 1001 Films You Must Watch Before You Die” are determined to be significant, based on aesthetic, cultural, social, historical, philosophical, technical and/or political film values. To do this, we will look closely at the details of some famous scenes in cinema history. Join us for a fun discussion about film criticism! This is a great primer for any community members interested in becoming a “screener” for the 2013 SLOIFF. Moderator: SLOIFF Advisory Board member, Steve Leone.
