RED CARPET EVENT – Surf Nite in SLO
Thursday, March 7, 2013 – 6:30pm
Fremont Theatre, San Luis Obispo

The SLOIFF is proud to present its 8th annual Surf Nite in SLO with an exciting double-feature: The Ride and the sensational new Australian film, Storm Surfers 3D.

Storm SurfersThe evening begins with The Ride, a documentary short directed by Leslie Iwerks, which won Best Film at XDance in 2005. Renowned surfers Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Tom Carroll, Ross Clarke-Jones and Peter Mel ride one of Maui’s biggest swells. The 45-minute film is an entertaining look at the training that goes into surfing waves the size of office buildings. Leslie Iwerks is this year’s recipient of the SLOIFF’s Spotlight Award, and The Ride is one of several Iwerks’ documentaries being screened throughout the Festival. Iwerks and producer Jane Kachmer will be on hand for the Q&A.

Fresh off a big win at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (the Aussie version of the Oscars) and the International 3D Society (Outstanding Achievement in a 3D Documentary) this will be only the third North American screening of Storm Surfers 3D since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.

Storm Surfers2Best friends and professional surfing legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones are very aware that middle age is upon them, but they can’t stop exploring the globe for that elusive rush of adrenaline and thrill of danger, in search of some of the most deadly waves in the Southern Ocean. Take a ride through the curl with them as you experience a 3D thrill you’ll not soon forget!

Using state-of-the-art 3D technology and narrated by Academy-Award nominee Toni Collette, directors Christopher Nelius and Justin McMillan’s film is a visually stunning and epic cinematic adventure that follows two men who refuse to put their youth behind them. Australian surf legend, Ross Clarke-Jones will be traveling to San Luis Obispo for this exciting event.

A poster competition between senior Cal Poly design and photography students determined a winning poster which will promote the event. All designs will be on display in the Fremont lobby and audience members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite! An after-party at SLO Brew will follow the event, with drink specials and the opportunity to meet fellow surfers and visiting filmmakers.
