_slidebanner_520x280The SLOIFF is very proud to host the West Coast Premiere of CITIZEN HEARST before it begins its nationwide release in theatres across the country. On Friday, March 8th, Hearst Corporation executives, members of the Hearst family, VIP guests and important media reps from around the country will join a limited number of paid guests to help honor documentary filmmaker, Leslie Iwerks, when she is presented with the Spotlight Award in the private Hearst Castle Theatre before the screening of her newest film, CITIZEN HEARST.

The evening begins at 5:00pm when attendees are driven up to the castle and led on a short sunset tour by Museum Director, Hoyt Fields. The tour will take guests to the indoor Roman Pool where they will enjoy a sumptuous reception featuring Hearst Ranch wines and hors d’oeuvres. Attendees will then move to the private Hearst Castle Screening Room to be entertained by a newly discovered reel of Hearst family “home movies” featuring silent stars of the day, including Marion Davies and John Gilbert, in a short silent film presentation, accompanied live by the Malibu Silent Film Orchestra, with an original composition by violinist/composer, Maria Newman.

After the screening, guests will meet for coffee and desserts by the Roman Pool before they make their descent back to the Visitor Center.

The SLOIFF is proud to present a retrospective of Leslie Iwerks documentaries throughout the festival. The Festival schedule will be posted online on Feb. 14th with full details.

The proceeds from this event benefit Friends of Hearst Castle for on-going museum restoration and the 2013 SLO International Film Festival.

Directed by Academy Award-nominated documentarian Leslie Iwerks and narrated by Academy Award nominee William H. Macy, Citizen Hearst traces the 125-year history of the Hearst media empire. From William Randolph Hearst’s pioneering and controversial days of headline-grabbing newspapers and yellow journalism, to the global impact of the company’s many successful newspaper, magazine, television and digital brands, Iwerks provides a rare glimpse behind the glass walls of the Hearst Tower. Interviewing with top magazine and fashion editors of leading Hearst magazines, as well as ‘tastemakers’ Oprah Winfrey, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, to name a few, Iwerks also traveled to San Simeon and had unprecedented access to the Hearst Castle and Hearst family members. 86 min.
