Featuring Leslie Iwerks’s “Industrial Light & Magic – Creating the Impossible”

5:30pm reception / 7:00pm screening / 8:00pm panel discussion
Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre – Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

ILMThe SLOIFF, along with ET Studios and Denise Dudley, is proud to present a tribute to Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic. For over thirty years, ILM has set the standard for visual effects and in the process, created some of the most stunning images in the history of film. Founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the special effects for his space epic Star Wars, no other facility of its type existed at the time. Since then it has created visual effects for nearly 300 feature films, contributing to half of the top 50 worldwide box office hits of all time.

Leslie_Iwerks_Photo_Hi-ResFilmmaker Leslie Iwerks (the recipient of this year’s SLOIFF Spotlight Award) will present her film Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible. This is the entertaining and illuminating story of the visual effects house that revolutionized Hollywood. Starting with the earliest days of Star Wars, director Leslie Iwerks takes us on a fascinating journey inside the walls and through the years of ILM, where creating the impossible remains a daily operation. Through the eyes of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Jon Favreau, Robin Williams, JJ Abrams and ILM’s top visual effects supervisors and artists, we see how ILM continues to bring cinema’s most challenging and innovative ideas to fruition.

Pirates of CaribbeanFollowing the screening, Leslie Iwerks will be joined on stage by Production Designer (and SLO native) Mark “Crash” McCreary and several ILM visual artists (to be announced soon), to discuss the newest developments at ILM, and the films they have been working on, including the upcoming The Lone Ranger. Cal Poly’s Liberal Arts & Engineering, David Gillette, will moderate the panel discussion and Q&A.

A reception at the theatre’s patio and lobby will precede the screening, with light appetizers, wine and refreshments at 5:30pm. Doors to the theatre open at 6:30pm and the movie event begins at 7:00pm.

Luis Wine Bar in downtown SLO will host an after-party from 9-11pm with Happy Hour drink specials and light appetizers.
