“In addition to accomplishing the important task of bringing these four inspirational stories to light, Following the Ninth succeeds on another level, that of brilliant filmmaking.” – Santa Barbara Independent, June 3, 2013
“The Immortal Ninth” – New Times, June 27, 2013
The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLOIFF) is proud to partner with Festival Mozaic and Ocule Films to present a sneak preview of FOLLOWING THE NINTH: In the Footsteps of Beethoven’s Final Symphony, a new documentary by Kerry Candaele.
The movie will now be screened at the Downtown Cinemas at 7:00pm on Wednesday, July 10. A Q&A with Kerry Candaele will follow the 78 min. film and an after-party at Luis Wine Bar will conclude the event. Luis Wine Bar is conveniently located near the Fremont Theatre in San Luis Obispo at 1021 Higuera St. There will be drink specials, appetizers and the opportunity to meet the filmmakers. No cover charge, for age 21+ only.
The screening has been shifted from the Fremont Theatre to the Downtown Cinemas due to a bee infestation that was discovered yesterday. 2013-07-10 PRESS RELEASE re Fremont Closure re Bee Infestation
Filmed on five continents and in twelve countries, Following The Ninth tells the story of four people whose lives have been transformed, repaired and healed by Beethoven’s Ninth message: Alle Menschen werden Bruder (All People Are Connected). At Tienanmen Square in 1989, students played the Ninth over loudspeakers as the army came in to crush their protests for freedom. In Chile, women under the Pinochet dictatorship sang the Ninth at torture prisons. In Japan each December, the Ninth is performed hundreds of times, often with 10,000 people in the chorus. Part road trip, part adventure, Following The Ninth is an inspirational story about the power of music and human resilience in dark times.
This event kicks off a new mid-year series of special screenings the SLOIFF will be offering leading in to the next Festival, March 5-9, 2014. Specially selected movies will screen all over San Luis Obispo County and a schedule will be announced soon.
Festival Mozaic is partnering with the SLOIFF for a second time and will share the net proceeds. In 2011, the two non-profit organizations collaborated on an event at the Galaxy Theatres with a screening of The Red Violin. Festival Mozaic begins its Summer Music Festival on July 16th with a wide range of concerts and musical events featuring exciting classical musicians led by Music Director Scott Yoo, in venues all over San Luis Obispo County until July 28th. For the full schedule and more information: www.FestivalMozaic.com.
Before Following the Ninth is released this fall, Ocule Films has planned a small number of sneak previews and San Luis Obispo was chosen because of the director’s Central Coast roots. Kerry Candaele grew up in Lompoc, California. He has produced and directed several documentaries including Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price and Iraq For Sale. He also collaborated with his brother Kelly on the documentary, A League of Their Own, about their mother’s experience in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This documentary was later turned into a blockbuster hit by Columbia Pictures with the same title, starring Tom Hanks, Madonna and Geena Davis. The SLOIFF screened the documentary in 2007 with Kelly, two of the original team members and his brother Casey (SLO resident and former professional baseball player) in attendance.
Kerry is the author of three books and has written articles and opinion pieces for scholarly and popular publications including USA Today, Symphony Magazine, the Nation, and the Huffington Post. He has also written and produced three CDs.
Tickets for Following the Ninth are on sale now! Tickets cost $12 ($10 for students, SLOIFF Film Society members and Festival Mozaic donors.) Tickets will also be available at the Downtown Cinemas on July 10 at 6:00pm. BUY TICKETS NOW
