The SLO County on the Silver Screen series continues in January with another Hollywood movie filmed locally. In the winter of 2001, mega stars Sandra Bullock (Gravity, The Blind Side) and a very young Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines) were in San Luis Obispo County shooting Barbet Schroeder’s murder/mystery, MURDER BY NUMBERS. You can see it on the big screen on Saturday, January 11 at 12:00pm at the Bay Theatre in Morro Bay.
MURDER BY NUMBERS is a story about two gifted high school students who execute a “perfect” murder – then become engaged in an intellectual contest with a seasoned homicide detective. The film also stars Ben Chaplin and Michael Pitt, who played Ryan Gosling’s best friend and accomplice who’s characters are loosely based on real-life murderers, Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold.
The movie was shot primarily in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, and there are many recognizable locations throughout the film including the SLO Courthouse and Fremont Theatre, the waterfront in Morro Bay where Sandra Bullock’s character lives in a houseboat, a house near Montana De Oro, and the SLO Mission/creek.
A number of local people were hired to work on the film in a variety of capacities, and we encourage anyone who was involved in the filming in any way to come to the screening to tell their stories!
Tickets are available now and at the door one hour before showtime. They are $10/$8 for students and SLOIFF Film Society, and $5 (at the door) for anyone who was in or worked on the movie.
Stay tuned for exciting news about the 2014 SLOIFF coming soon! Happy New Year!
