William “Wild Bill” Wellman forged a directing career spanning 35 years and 76 films, winning many nominations and awards including the Best Picture Oscar for “Wings” in 1927. A daring fighter pilot seriously wounded in WWI, Wellman was not easily intimidated by the challenges of working in Hollywood and he built a reputation for his fiery, take-no-prisoners style. He worked with many of Hollywood’s legendary actors.
William Wellman Jr. won the Best Documentary award at the 1996 SLO Film Fest with this fascinating portrait of his dad who was a prolific filmmaker, father, husband and Hollywood pioneer. Narrated by Alec Baldwin, there are interviews with many of the greats, including James Cagney, Clint Eastwood and Robert Mitchum. Wellman Jr. is delighted to return to San Luis Obispo to host a repeat screening of his film, and to sign copies of his book of the same name. Documentary. 95 min. USA
