“Everything old is new again!” That idiom perfectly sums up the fascinating history of the vinyl record, which seemingly vanished into relative obscurity in the 1980s, but is now one of the hottest trends again worldwide. Some wonder how that can be, given the ease, quality and accessibility of digital music. But there’s just something about spinning vinyl, and VINYL NATION does a deep dive into what that something might be.
Filmmakers Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone trace the history as well as the technical side of record production, and find a collection of passionate fans, musicians, technicians and designers who share their knowledge and theories.
After the movie, enjoy a lively pre-recorded discussion led by Palm Theatre owner (and vinyl enthusiast) Jim Dee, when he talks to filmmakers Kevin Smokler, Christopher Boone, SLO vinyl expert Malik Miko Thorne, Traffic Record shop owner Manuel Barba and Kristy Duncan, Cal Poly/KCPR alum who built her own turntable after being inspired by VINYL NATION.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Here at SLO Film Festival we work hard to offer the best experience to our audience and community. That’s why this year we are working with Film Festival Alliance and Independent Filmmaker Project to conduct a first ever national survey of film festival participants. As a thank you for your time and feedback, we’re offering all survey participants a chance to win a 2021 Virtual Movie Fanatic Pass.
Today is #givingtuesday and you can give to the film festival in many ways! You can make a donation, sponsor a film at our 2021 festival or purchase a ticket at our Vinyl Nation event. Every little bit helps in our efforts to expand minds, open hearts, and entertain people through worldwide independent cinema.
See you at the movies!
