An Act of Love tells the story of an unwitting advocate in the fight for equal rights within the Church. Rev. Frank Schaefer had his ministerial credentials revoked in December 2013 after officiating his son’s same-sex wedding. Six years after doing so, a member of his congregation brought an official complaint against him, and he was brought to trial within the Church. Will Rev. Schaefer’s trial be the final breaking point for the Church? Or will his story be the final chapter in the long struggle for LGBTQ equality within the UMC?
2020 Update: Shortly after this film won accolades and multiple awards, the UMC formed a special commission to study the rift these issues had caused in the church. Copies of the film were sent to United Methodist Church delegates who participated in the 2016 General Conference. These decision-makers were able to view the film prior to voting on the UMC’s policies related to LGBTQ inclusion. Unfortunately the General Conference scheduled for May 2020 has been postponed to 2021 because of the pandemic, but this is just another great example of how MOVIES MATTER!
