COMMUNITY OF SKATE: DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS + 4DWN

Skate films have been a fundamental part of independent filmmaking since its early origins, allowing any kid the ability to pick up a camera and make content regardless of cost, distribution or fame. It has often been the launchpad to cultural art movements, social change, music and athleticism, but skateboarding has also always been about community. This year, we’re excited to honor this community and its contributions to film with multiple films that celebrate the culture and community of skateboarding.

Join us before the film for a showcase of custom skateboard designs with live-screen printing of these custom designs by the San Luis Obispo High School Advanced Graphic Design class. Stay after the screening for a discussion with the legendary Stacy Peralta, Rob Cahill, Mike Crum and Kareem Campbell along with 4DWN director Danny Schmidt.

DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS
This award-winning, thrilling story is about a group of discarded kids who revolutionized skateboarding and shaped the attitude and culture of modern day extreme sports. Featuring old skool skating footage, exclusive interviews and a blistering rock soundtrack, DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS captures the rise of the Zephyr skateboarding team from Venice’s Dogtown, a tough “locals only” beach with a legacy of outlaw surfing.

4DWN (17 mins)
Before the feature we’ll showcase the short film 4DWN, telling the unconventional and deeply personal story of a South Dallas skatepark whose mission is to change the lives of everyone who walks through the gate. The 4DWN skatepark is a resilience hub rooted in skate culture, tackling head-on the challenges of food insecurity and social justice in one of the city’s poorest communities.

THE BOGEYS

Rooted in punk, with an indie spirit, a hard rock edge, sprinkled with pop savvy, all with the heart and warmth of the California Central Coast that nourished them. This band will hit you with jagged, propulsive, at times proggy chops with one hand, while conjuring wide-open spaces and patient beauty with the other. They are as likely to grab you by the scruff of your neck and make you headbang as they are to reach into your heart and give you-no, share with you-a vulnerable, emotional, cathartic moment.

Since their 2016 emergence, The Bogeys continue to boogie on stages that include Shabang Music Festival and SLO Brew’s Rod & Hammer Rock. The newest lineup, in a post pandemic rebirth, introduces the sounds of psychedelia and electronica upon their rock roots. Similar to a box of chocolates, you just never quite know which type of anomalous production you’ll experience, ever-changing.
