There’s so much to talk about, it’s hard to know where to start. Do you like running, surfing, cycling or snowboarding? Ever tried Quidditch? We’ve got a movie for you. Do you prefer more cerebral activities like reading, gender studies, politics, social justice? We’ve got movies for you too.

How about farming, gardening, travel, softball, dogs, fishing, wine, music, drugs, science or aging? Any of those topics sound interesting? Then we have at least one great new movie for you too!

Short films liked LAMBING SEASON play before features, and in Shorts Programs throughout the festival.

Short films like LAMBING SEASON play before features, and in Shorts Programs throughout the festival.

By now you’re probably getting the message – we have such a wonderful eclectic program this year, it’s really hard to focus on any one film to tell you about…they’re ALL good! And they’re made by extremely talented, creative and intelligent people, many of who will be visiting SLO County to be here for entertaining Q&A sessions after their movies.

So, take a look at the website if you haven’t already, and plan to take in one or more of these exciting movies, panels, seminars and/or special events during the coming week. Beginning with our Opening Night party and film, THE ROAD WITHIN, on Tuesday, March 10th and all the way through to our Closing Night Sing-along – SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN with closed captioning, we have an EPIC Film Festival happening throughout SLO County.

Sing along to one of the best musical comedies ever, closing night at the Fremont Theatre.

Sing-along to one of the best musical comedies ever made, closing night at the Fremont Theatre.

Consider a Festival Pass if you haven’t already bought one. A pass will give you access to films and events that might sell out (you must be there 15 min. before the screening to guarantee seating.)

If any movies do sell out, we’ll do our best to schedule an extra screening on the last day of the festival – Sunday, March 15th. We’ve left a few open slots for this reason, so watch for announcements of what will fill those slots by Saturday night.

The Fremont Theatre has generously offered to play all the winning films the week after the Festival (winners to be announced on Saturday evening) so that schedule will be posted by Sunday, March 15th.

Stop by and visit our ever-friendly Ticket Mistresses at our HQ (1007 Monterey St. SLO) during our expanded hours this week:
Monday March 9   11am – 5pm
Tuesday and Wed. March 10,11  11 am- 7:30pm
Thursday March 12  10 am – 7:30pm
Friday March 13  9:30 am – 7:30pm
Saturday and Sunday, March 14, 15  9:30am – 5pm

They will happily sell you a pass or tickets to any of our special events (listed below) and you’ll find postcards and more information about movies that are playing too! Or purchase special event tickets online now.

Hope to see you at the SLOIFF very soon! Thanks for supporting one of the best cultural events on the Central Coast. MOVIES MATTER!

Sincerely,
Wendy Eidson
SLOIFF Festival Director

TRW 3

“The Road Within” starring Robert Sheehan, Dev Patel and Zoe Kravitz

We’re only a week away from unleashing over one hundred new independent films on Central Coast and out-of-town audiences…and we’re getting excited!

These movies are so new, so undiscovered that some of them don’t even have trailers yet! We are very excited to finally be able to share with you the new trailer for our opening night movie,
THE ROAD WITHIN!

“The Road Within” Director, Gren Wells

We’re also thrilled that the red carpet that night will feature not only the director, Gren Wells and her producer/husband Brent Emery…but also one of the stars of the movie, Robert Sheehan along with girlfriend, Sofia Boutella (KINGSMAN: The Secret Service) and fellow cast member, Alli Hillis. Several producers will also be in attendance, so expect a lively Q&A after the movie.

Synopsis: Vincent (played by Irish native Robert Sheehan) has Tourette’s syndrome. When his mother dies, Vincent becomes obsessed with scattering her ashes by the ocean. Too much for his busy father to handle, Vincent is sent to a residential treatment center in Nevada where he befriends two other “inmates” struggling with their own personal issues. At odds with both his father and therapist, Vincent convinces his new friends to join him on a an epic road trip. As with most adventures of their nature, the destination ends up being less important than the journey. Writer/director Gren Wells (recently named on Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch list) has knocked one out of the park with this refreshingly original and heartwarming story of family, friendship and growing up. Leave the kids at home for this one though…as you might imagine, Vincent’s language is a little ripe, to say the least!

Meet the filmmakers, cast and fellow Festival-goers at the Opening Night Party happening at Luna Red in downtown SLO. From 5:00-6:30pm, enjoy mouth-watering appetizers, wines from Center of Effort and Bianchi Winery, craft beers and a signature cocktail in Luna Red’s relaxing yet elegant patio setting, right next to the Mission and just blocks from the Fremont Theatre.

Movie Mogul and Filmmaker passes will be accepted for the Opening Night Party and movie. Tickets for the reception will be available on a limited basis at the door for $30/person. Tickets for the movie are on sale now.

Another Special Event You Shouldn’t Miss: RED OBSESSION!

Sponsored by Tooth & Nail Winery, SLO Wine Country and Krush 92.5

Red ObsessionFor over three centuries Bordeaux has commanded an almost mythical status in the world of wine as a symbol of wealth, power and influence. But recently prices for the prestige red wines have been skyrocketing. Something unprecedented is happening to the Bordeaux fine wine market and that something is China.

Red Obsession sets out to explore the Bordeaux phenomenon. Just how good can
really good wine be? What compels a cashed up industrialist to pay hundreds of
thousands of dollars for a single bottle? Is it taste, prestige or investment that is driving
the demand for the wines of Bordeaux? Or is it simply the need to own something
ethereal, unworldly and limited? Red Obsession is a story of aspiration for greatness.
It is also a study of power and passion in high places and the economic power shift
from West to East. Narrated by Russell Crowe. Documentary. Australia/China/France/
Hong Kong/UK. 75 min. MOVIE TRAILER.

Toothnail logoJoin us for a pre-screening reception on Thursday, March 12 at the new Tooth & Nail Winery (formerly Eagle Castle) where you’ll be treated to delectable appetizers from their award-winning chef and first-class wines, all in the charmingly eccentric setting of this spectacular winery on Highway 46 West, a 10-15 drive from the Park Cinemas.

Also starring Kyra Sedgwick and Robert Patrick.

Here’s what one critic has to say about this great ensemble cast:
“Sheehan does an amazing job not just with the American accent but with capturing the physical manifestations of the ailment. Kravitz, best known for her roles in Divergent and X-Men: First Class, manages to be abrasive and compassionate at the same time; she delivers a vibrant performance. But it may be that Patel is most impressive of all. The star of Slumdog Millionaire and the HBO series The Newsroom has never had a role this demanding, and he does astonishing work that reveals a whole new side of his talent.” Stephen Farber / The Hollywood Reporter

Come to the Fremont Theatre today (Saturday, Dec. 20) at 11am and find out from a crew member who was there! She watched as Flick stuck his tongue to the pole….as the bullies chased poor Randy down the lane…and as Ralphie uttered those bad, bad words when the bolts flew off the hubcap!
