For ONE NIGHT ONLY, the bizarre and hilarious world of Industrial Musicals comes to San Luis Obispo! Motivational show tunes about selling tractors, bathtubs, and dog food that the public was never meant to see!
The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival will host an unusual one-two punch of comedy and music on Friday, November 8th, as Steve Young, former David Letterman writer and star of the acclaimed documentary Bathtubs Over Broadway, screens the film at the Palm Theater and participates in a Q & A session before moving next door to Hotel San Luis Obispo to present a selection of vintage industrial musicals on film that can be seen nowhere else.
Young is the main subject of director Dava Whisenant’s award-winning Bathtubs Over Broadway, which follows Young on his quest to collect rare souvenir records from private corporate musicals performed for salesmen, and to meet the people who wrote and performed in these shows commissioned by companies like Ford, General Electric, Xerox, and American Standard.
Young accidentally discovered industrial musicals while gathering strange record albums for a segment on the Letterman show. As his collection grew, he eventually co-authored a book on the subject, “Everything’s Coming Up Profits.” In addition to participating in Whisenant’s documentary, he presents his live show about industrial musicals around the country, interspersing the films with commentary, anecdotes, and even live music. Young will screen exclusive 60’s and 70’s industrial musical films from General Electric, Purina Dog Chow, Kellogg’s and more!
Bathtubs Over Broadway, distributed by Focus Features, won the Writers Guild of America award for Best Documentary Screenplay, and Dava Whisenant won the Best New Documentary Director award at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film won numerous Best Documentary and Audience Favorite awards during its film festival run.
