SHORT CUTS features 10 short films created by Cal Poly students under the mentorship of Randi Barros, screenwriter, editor, and ISLA Lecturer, and James Werner, Associate Professor and Chair of Art & Design. Engage with emotionally charged stories exploring love, loss, discovery, and unexpected moments of connection. From writing the scripts to filming the scenes, students of different majors have come together to bring their stories to life. See tomorrow’s filmmakers at work today.

A BEACH DAY
A man and a woman meet as strangers on a beach, form a relationship, have a child, and then must cope with one of those things being taken away.

 

BETWEEN BAKERY WALLS
When a co-dependent widowed fly wants to celebrate his maggot baby’s birthday, he must steal a piece of cake by traversing across the bakery where the day’s sweets are kept, before the giant baker catches him and leaves his baby an orphan.

 

BOYS WILL BE BOYS
A self-proclaimed outcast sets his sights on a girl in his class and becomes determined that they will be together.

 

CRACKED
Lana is having trouble navigating a breakup until she enlists her new roommate to help her deal with her heartbreak and maybe get a little revenge.

 

LOST
Two boys enter their grouchy, elderly neighbor’s house in an attempt to retrieve a missing item, but soon find themselves lost and desperate to escape.

 

MISREMEMBRANCE
A young couple are preparing to move when they stumble upon an old photo album that reveals unexpected truths and lies.

 

PAINT ME LIKE
In this offbeat romantic comedy, struggling painter Jeremy encounters Elise, a wannabe model, who forces him to take on a commission he doesn’t want. In an unexpected turn of events, the two realize they just might need each other to make it big in the city.

 

SAUDADE
As the world adjusts to the new normal created after the pandemic, a young college student must confront her unresolved emotions about her romance with an old friend during quarantine.

 

SIX MONTHS
A young woman grapples with grief and the fact that nothing lasts forever in the wake of her best friend’s passing.

 

VIGILIUS HAUFNIENSIS: THE WATCHMAN
An anxious college student must battle a monstrous presence when it begins to haunt his emotional and academic life.
